What a thrill it was to stand in front of one of the wonders of the world! It is truly stunning, and incredibly well-preserved considering it’s >2,000 years old. However, it’s really a bee hive with people chattering, posing for selfies, climbing on camels for the obligatory 2 minute ride and haggling with all the vendors…

The Siq (Arabic: السيق, transliterated al-Sīq, literally ‘the Shaft’) is the main entrance to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra in southern Jordan. The Siq was used as the grand caravan entrance into Petra. It’s nearly a mile long, 3-12 feet wide gorge of red sandstone, some of it carved by the Nabateans thousands of years ago. Horse drawn carts rattle alongside tourists stopping to gape up at the fantastic rock formations. It’s an utterly fascinating journey that culminates in the grand view of the Treasury.
It’s also very challenging to photograph with deep shadow at the bottom and bright sunlight at the top. I’m sure many people using only smartphone or point & shoot cameras are going to be very disappointed with their images. I used 5 bracketed images, blended in Lightroom using the HDR mode to achieve the proper balance of light and shadow.
